Studying dual languages in the Department of Modern Languages and Linguistics at FSU emphasizes both practical language skills in two languages and critical cultural awareness, preparing students for work in multilingual environments. The major allows students to focus on proficiency in two languages of their choice from Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.
The dual languages major within the B.A. in Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers students the option to gain language skills and cultural knowledge within two language areas. Beyond the two required core courses, LIN 2004 World Languages and FOW 2100 Literature and the World, students will complete 24 hours with language, literature, and culture courses taught in the two target languages (coursework taught in English does not count for this major). Students can choose to divide course work equally over the two languages (12 hours in each language) or pursue coursework that emphasizes proficiency in one language over the other (15 hours in a primary language and 9 hours in a secondary language).
